“American Standard” Calls for the New Generations of Designers to Join AMERICAN STANDARD DESIGN AWARD (ASDA) to Splash Their Creativity and Fulfill the Needs in the New Normal

01 October 2021, Thailand – LIXIL, the maker of pioneering water and housing products, is excited to announce the launch of the American Standard Design Award (ASDA) 2022. Organized by American Standard for students in the region, the competition aims to bring the design community across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) together to develop purposeful function that is inspired by the next generation of designers.

At the heart of the ASDA is the single proposition to embrace purposeful and thoughtful design to enhance hygiene standards while providing solutions to the ever-changing needs of consumers, from space maximization to comfort and convenience. With this in mind, the theme of this year’s competition is Purposeful Design - Transforming the Way We Live.

The competition seeks to promote the user-centric design philosophy that guides the American Standard brand in delivering dependable bathroom solutions that combine thoughtful designs and innovative technologies. The ASDA allows students to showcase their craft and introduce the concept of a purposeful and thoughtful design through innovations that address daily consumer issues.

For ASDA 2022 in Thailand, the competition is structured into two leagues: Students and Professionals. For Student League, applicants need to be Year 2 tertiary students from the Faculty of Architecture, or any faculties of design. The winning student will represent Thailand at the regional stage of APAC to compete against the other winners from 7 countries including Australia, Cambodia, India, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam where the best designs will be judged for the Grand Prize.

Applicants of both Student League and Professional League must present their bathroom design which is accurately aligned with the theme of each category required by the judging panel as follows:

1st Category: Residential Bathroom Space Design – Condominium (High-Rise) Bathroom

  • Concept: Urbanization
  • Increased urbanization has caused living spaces to become smaller. With limited living spaces, home owners are looking into making bathroom spaces as multi-functional as possible.

2nd Category: Hospitality Bathroom Space Design – Boutique Hotel or Resort Bathroom

  • Concept: Health & Well-Being
  • Shifting into the new normal, there is a heightened awareness and enhanced requirements for better health and hygiene standards in shared facilities. Hotel bathroom designs will now need to address and alleviate these concerns to assure hotel guests with a worry-free stay.

Applicants of both Student League and Professional League can choose to submit their design to any one of the categories or both. In this regard, there is a given product, Studio S Tankless Toilet, which must be incorporated in the design and needs to be a key component of their final work.

It is a real challenge for all participants as they need to create something that has never been introduced to the market before, and conceptually fulfill the needs of urban lifestyles. With limited living spaces, designers will have to optimize and create multi-functional spaces in homes without compromising on living and work spaces. As the world shifts into the new normal, there is a heightened awareness and enhanced requirements for better health and hygiene standards in shared facilities. These are keys that the applicants need to deliberately interpret to ensure the benefits of the given products will be optimized in a distinctive way.”

At the national level of American Standard Design Award (ASDA) Asia Pacific 2022, we are truly honored to have a number of experts from the design industry as our judges, including IDIN Architects, Architects 49, PIA interior, P49 Deesign & Associates, Dsign Something, as well as those of LIXIL, to discover and identify the top design talents from universities and professionals throughout the country, and to mentor the national winner in preparation for the final round at the APAC level. Aiming to find the best of all to represent Thailand at the regional stage, the judges will definitely take time to consider each submitted work deliberately and make the final decision thoroughly to ensure that the national finalist can win the award of honor for the country. In this regard, the total value of all prizes for the competition at both levels is worth over 800,000 baht.
